Your Feelings Are Real — But Don’t Run the Show

Your Feelings Are Real — But Don’t Run the Show

Emotions are powerful, and teaching our teens to manage them can make a significant difference in their daily lives.

Understanding Emotional Awareness

Emotions are natural and valuable. They inform us about our environment and inner world. However, letting them dictate our actions unchecked can lead to regrettable decisions.

Try This with Your Teen Today

  1. Name It: Ask them to locate that feeling and describe it. Eg a tightness in my chest. Ask if Is there a word that goes with that? Worry? Frustration?
  2. Reflect: Ask what created this feeling. Identifying the cause helps with understanding and it’s helpful to share a problem.
  3. Choose: Is there an action that could help? What’s stopping you from taking that?
  4. Act: Encourage them to take that step and accept the outcome.
  5. Breathe : Teach them to take a breath of CALM in and to Breathe out what ever that word is that described their feeling. Do it at least three times. Nice and slow. CALM in and  WORRY out. Imagine that as you breathe in this deep breath of calm it is going straight to the area where Worry is and is absorbing it and then  Breathe out Worry.

Resetting with Emotional Intelligence

This process builds emotional intelligence and equips teens with coping mechanisms that last a lifetime.

In Summary

Our teens’ feelings are valid, but they shouldn’t dictate their behavior. By teaching them to acknowledge and manage emotions, we empower them to live balanced, thoughtful lives.
